Key Ingredients for Feature Writing

1. LIST 3 DETAILS THAT YOU FOUND ABOVE THAT HELP THE STORY
"She was 5-foot-5, 105 pounds. Pretty and petite." I think this helps to create a vision for the reader. "A 47-page affidavit from an F.B.I. agent investigating a prostitution ring..." This tells the reader what is going on in this peice "But a law enforcement official and another person briefed on the case have identified Client 9 as Eliot Spitzer, the governor of New York." This is a big sucker and really makes the refer want to continue
 2. THERE ARE DETAILS THAT YOU MIGHT NOT INCLUDE IN A REGULAR NEWS STORY, PLEASE LIST AT LEAST 2 OF THEM
"Her client for the evening, a return customer" A writer might not usually say that he is a returning customer but I think they added it to show that this isn't a one-time thing. "had booked Room 871" I think this information isn't really necessary but helps to pint a picture.
3. DO YOU WANT TO KEEP READING?
Yes, it leaves on a cliffhanger and is well written so I would definitely like to continue.
4. LIST 3 DESCRIPTIVE DETAILS THAT YOU FOUND ABOVE THAT HELP THE STORY
"She lay on a torn, moldy mattress on the floor" "Her ribs and collarbone jutted out" "Insect bites, rashes and sores pocked her skin". All of these create a terrible picture for a reader.
5. THERE ARE DETAILS THAT YOU MIGHT NOT INCLUDE IN A REGULAR NEWS STORY, PLEASE LIST AT LEAST 2 OF THEM
"except for a swollen diaper" this a very gory detail and some writers might not include it. "her black hair was matted, crawling with lice" again, this is very gory and is very disturbing.
 6. WHAT CONDITIONS EXIST REGARDING THIS CHILD THAT THE AUTHOR DESCRIBES TO YOU?
The child is a young girl in a room that is infested with bugs. She is dirty and is not properly , if at all, fed.
7. DO YOU WANT TO KEEP READING?
This quite disturbing piece and I easily get sick so I don't think it would be a good idea for me to continue.
8. HOW DOES THE QUOTE HELP THE TRANSITION STATEMENT ABOVE IT?
The like that the man repeats himself in the quote to make it even more emotional. This quote sounds very hard hitting and really helps to understand that there was little, innocent children tat were killed.
9. DO YOU WANT TO KEEP READING?
Yes, I do. This is very sad and I would like to more about the inncident.
10. LIST 3 DESCRIPTIVE DETAILS THAT YOU FOUND ABOVE THAT HELP THE STORY
"on private land in a narrow canyon off the road to Zaca Lake, about 15 miles north of Solvang" This tell very specifically where the setting is. "The temperature was headed toward 100 degrees." the author is giving a hint to how hot it was so the reader can understand how easy it would be for a fire to start. "Rainfall the previous winter had been among the lowest on record in Southern California" The author includes this to show how easy it was for the fire to speed with no moisture.
11. THERE ARE DETAILS THAT YOU MIGHT NOT INCLUDE IN A REGULAR NEWS STORY, PLEASE LIST AT LEAST 2 OF THEM
"on private land in a narrow canyon off the road to Zaca Lake, about 15 miles north of Solvang" This is very specific and really necessary.
12. WHAT WAS THE ANECDOTE THAT THE AUTHOR USED IN THIS STORY?
They used a very simple how it started, how it grew, and where it went.
13. WHAT WAS THE IRONICAL PART OF THIS STORY IN REGARDS TO HOW THE FIRE STARTED?
They were fixing a water pipe that created a huge fire.
14. DO YOU WANT TO KEEP READING?
I don't particularly like this story so no.
15. LIST 3 PIECES OF BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOUND IN THESE 3 PARAGRAPHS
"A decade ago, the agency spent $307 million on fire suppression. "Last year, it spent $1.37 billion." "n California, state wildfire spending has shot up 150% in the last decade, to more than $1 billion a year."
16. WHICH ONE DO YOU THINK IS THE MOST CRUCIAL?
"In California, state wildfire spending has shot up 150% in the last decade, to more than $1 billion a year."
17. DO YOU WANT TO KEEP READING?
I'm not interested in wildfires but it may be educational , so its a possibility.

1. In the news recently there has been a heated debate over Mascot names. The most visible is the Washington Redskins, although there are high school and college teams with similar names. Opponents of the names conclude that the mascots/team names are derogatory and rude and what them changed, while proponents believe that the historical significance of the names are overrated and that the schools/teams should not be forced to change their mascot. Here is some additional information: the Washington team has been names Redskins since 1933, there is a baseball team in Atlanta called the Atlanta Braves, and Native Americans have come down on both sides of the subject with some demanding a change and others who believe the name is fine. What is your opinion of the subject? Make sure to tell me why you think that way!!

I do think that those names are something of a racial slur. I don't know if changing them would do much good because they have been around so long. I can also agree that recently people can sometimes take those things too seriously. As a nation, we are very sensitive to comments about race because our history.

Thanksgiving Story

I wouldn't say that this has been the best Thanksgiving break I have had but it wasn't so terrible.

This happened to be the first Thanksgiving I have spent without seeing my father and it was very refreshing. Lets just say we don't get along.

It started pretty great on tuesday night where I got to stay up late watching various television shows on Netflix.

I then woke up on Wednesday with a big dilemma. I could spend the day on Tumblr and play with my dogs or do my science project. I knew that doing the project was more important and decided to proceed with it. Only when I finished I rewarded myself with a few hours blogging on Tumblr then went to bed.

Opening my eyes on Thursday morning, I knew something was not right. It was quiet, too quiet for a house with a preteen boy who usually has a parade of friends over, two dogs who love to bark, and a mother who liked to constantly think aloud.

I came out of my room to find my little brother sick and my mother trying to find the right medicine for him. My older brother was nowhere to be found , we later found out he had spent the night at a friends, and my dogs happened to still be sleeping.

After checking to make sure my brother didn't need anything, I went back to my room where I was hit with a migraine. My brother and I ended up not being able to go to our family dinner being held at my aunts.

My mother still made food and planned on going when my Aunt called to say she invited her whole husbands family there too. My mother then decided to stay home with her kids instead of spending Thanksgiving with a couple of her siblings and a bunch of strangers.

Black Friday was spent mostly inside our house. The idea of doing something in a retail area was not a pleasant one to any members of my small family. I did take my husky for a chilly walk around my neighborhood.

Saturday involved going to see the new film Catching Fire. I am absolutely in love with it. My mom and younger brother both read the complete series already but i had only sen the first film. I was completely blown away with it. So blown away I have now started the last book in the trilogy Mockingjay.

We then proceed to go to Petsmart to buy my puppy a sweater. I was not for the idea at first. I have always thought dressing up your dog is some kind of touture, almost an  painfully embarrassing  experience for them. However, my mom made her case about how my puppy has been cold and snuggling with blankets.

My little mutt puppy is now a proud owner of a very fluffy, very dignified, blue dog coat.

The next day we all got a case of the infamous Sunday Blues. But I did not dwell on the idea of returning to school after my short holiday. I decided to reorganize my room. My book shelf is now a place I can look without mentally cringing at the sight of it. Though Mount. Avery's Clothes, a chair in my room where I tend to throw my unwanted clothes, was left untouched.

After my somewhat busy Sunday, I brushed my teeth and went to bed, but sleep did not come. It took a several hours, a little bit of meditation, and some yoga to finally get to bed.

So, my Thanksgiving break may have had a few rough patches, over it was pretty good.
