Magazines Part II

Early magazine covers didn't look anything like ours today. The covers used to be used as a table of contents with a bunch of words. They used to make the covers of magazines look like book covers with words and maybe a small picture. The covers of magazines then started to look like posters. A lot of amazing artists emerged at that time because of their drawings being put on covers. Later, while still keeping the poster-like style, magazines started to put real people. The poster-like magazines can still be found today, just not as often. Cover lines began to be a big thing in that time also. Magazines relied on the lines to draw in peoples eyes. Companies that created magazines started to have a specific logo that identified their magazines. Magazines then started to question where to put the cover lines and experimenting with them. In the 60's, text on the page became bolder and brighter. The text also seemed to box in the person or model on the cover. Magazine were, and still are, putting so much text on the cover that it almost completely covers the picture. The pictures on the cover began to look like a background for the text.

Favorite Cover

Harper's Bazaar, March 2012: "Gwyneth Revealed"

I really enjoy the picture. I think it is not as racy as it could be but shows just enough skin. I also really like the simple text and how its not overcrowding the picture. I think that it being "Gwyneth Revealed" and then covering her face is very creative. I don't like the dress though. I believe they could have found one a little more flattering to Gwyneth's body. And I don't usually like black shoes with a black dress (somewhat boring), but I think the all black really suits the cover. Overall, I think this is an amazing cover and would love to see more from this magazine.

A. Read the opinion article on page A9 titled Mentally disabled inmates still routinely put to death in Texas. Give me your opinion about this topic. Please reference the article to support your opinion. The simple question to answer is do you agree or disagree with the writer.
I think that if you murder someone in cold blood, without a reason of self defense, you should be put to death. The way I see it is an eye for an eye. I understand that people with mental disabilities might not completely understand this though. That also dent mean that it is okay for them to go out and kill someone either. If you understand that you are killing someone, you should understand being put to death for it.

1. On your blog post your reactions to what you read and what you saw. How about 3-4 sentences.
I think what Nick Brandt is doing is amazing. I think that animals should be more protected than they are. He capture the beauty of animals and the land of Africa in such an amazing way. He is a truly alienated photographer.
2. Do a google image search for Nick Brandt, find your favorite photo and post it on your blog.

3. Describe it and tell me why its your favorite.
I just overall love this picture. The cloud with the sun shining in makes the picture that much better. I think giraffes are fascinating creature and photograph greatly.
4. What rules of photography are evident in the photos you selected, be sure to explain the rule to me?
You could say repetition of giraffes for sure.

He will be the last to record a testament to the wild animals and places there before they are destroyed by the hands of man

1. Tell me which amusement park featured in the two articles that you would like to visit and take your camera along and what about that park made you want to go there. Write at least a paragraph.
I think I would like to go to Spreepark, Berlin, Germany. The park still looks like its in good shape and not as eerily creepy as the others. Ihave always wanted to visit Berlin too so that would definitely be a fun trip.
2. Post one photo from that park. You may use the photos from the link, or you can google an entirely new photo. I would prefer to see a photo of the park in disrepair and not a photo of it when it was still operating.

3. Think of at least FIVE other unusual places you think would be of interest to photographers. List them.
I think It would be nice to photograph a mass graveyard, the church of  the pope, an old war sight, an old castle, any type of waterfall.
4. Use google or another search engine to research ONE of your five places and see if anyone has already started documenting that place. If you find that someone has already started - post at least one photo of their work.

5. Write a paragraph about why you think that it would be fun to document that location. Tell me what interests you about that place and what kind of photos you could expect to take there.
I have always had a certain love for castles. I think most little girl want to be a princess for the price but I wanted to be one for the castle. It has so much history and secrets within it. And an abandoned one would be cool because it must be old and you wouldn't be blocked off from photographing anything.
6. Tell me what it would take for you to go and take photos at your location. What would you need as far as equipment goes, travel plans, expenses you might encounter and what laws you would have to take into consideration to take photos at your spot.
I would have to take a plane and probably a car or train once I got to the country where the castle was. I would need a camera but Im not sure what other equipment. I would have to look into the laws in said country and see if the castle was open to the public.

Self Portrait and Portraits Part I

Tip 1: There are a lot of ‘rules’ out there when it comes to composition and I’ve always had a love hate relationship with them. My theory is that while they are useful to know and employ that they are also useful to know so you can purposely break them – as this can lead to eye catching results.
Tip 2: In some portraits it is the expression on the face of your subject that makes the image.
Tip 3: The most common mistake made by photographers is that they are not physically close enough to their subjects. In some cases this means that the center of interest—the subject—is just a speck, too small to have any impact.

Environmental portraits
I like this picture because its almost as if you can see into his life.  This gives off certain emotions and I really like the coloring of it too.
Again, I really like the coloring. This picture gives off a lonely vibe but not in a bad way. He seems content to be in a dinner alone.

                                                     Photography self portraits

I really enjoy the layering of this picture. All of the different facial expressions make it very unique.
I can't really explain why but I find this picture amazing. I love it and its really creepy.

Casual portraits
I like that this picture isn't overlay posed like most wedding pictures are. This picture is fun and goofy.
Again, this picture is fun and goofy. I like pictures like this candid one way more than posed ones.

I have a cannon at home that I plan to shoot with. Im not sure who I plan to capture but probably either my dogs or mom. I think taking my pictures outside with natural light will make them successful.

I don't know very much about Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 other than it want missing.  I have heard that the plane went off of its course for 7 hours so i don't believe it was an accident. People are also calling their relatives phones and they are ringing and that wouldn't be happening if they were at the bottom of the ocean. The pilot had a flight simulator in his house and the police are trying to see if he practiced landing somewhere remote. I don't have any complete guesses as to where the plane is, but I think they are alive and on some small island somewhere waiting be rescued and I hope they are safe.
